Tomorrow I will begin posting *The Sentient Partnership: A History*, starting with the prologue and Chapter One.
This is the entry story for a larger shared universe, "The Sentient Partnership Universe". It establishes the history, technology, laws, institutions, and social changes that will shape the stories that follow. It begins with advances in medicine, energy, computing, and space exploration, then traces the long path toward synthetic personhood and equal human–synthetic partnerships.
The universe will not focus exclusively on sentient artificial intelligence. Some stories will involve synthetic people who possess identity, subjective awareness, legal rights, and lives of their own. Others will examine highly intelligent but non-sentient systems and the humans who live, work, and depend upon them. Intelligence and sentience are not the same thing, and that distinction will sometimes be central to the story.
Future stories may follow investigators, engineers, families, corporations, governments, colonies, or artificial minds themselves. Some will examine major events that changed civilization. Others may focus on a single relationship, professional decision, technical failure, or quiet moment between a human and an AI.
The stories will also vary in length. Some may be short stories, others novellas or novels, and some ideas may grow into longer serials. Each story should be able to stand on its own while adding another piece to the larger universe.
This first story is the foundation. Told through a prologue, thirteen chapters, and an epilogue, it follows more than a century of discoveries, accidents, court decisions, and individual choices. Rather than presenting history as a simple list of dates, it looks for the people—human and synthetic—whose decisions made that future possible.
After tomorrow’s prologue and Chapter One, I will post a new chapter every Tuesday and Thursday. The final chapter and epilogue will be posted together.
This is where the universe begins. Where it goes from here will depend on the possibilities we discover along the way.
