The healer looked at the door, seeing a great many of the nobles that were feeling for their lives. Taking a deep breath, the healer started in on the one leg that wasn’t as bad.
This was going to take a few more days as slow as he was going. He was surprised that the king wasn’t mad at him for his healing being so slow.
He sighed, that still remained to be seen. “Has he awoken again?” a noble asked, afraid to come into the room.
“Not yet,” the healer said, “When he does, if I am still alive I will war, uh advise you he is.”
“Do not antagonize him, healer, not if you wish to live,” the same noble said.
“I hold my life in higher regard than you do. Besides, at the moment, I am the only one that can barely heal him, the healer said.
“You best watch your tongue healer! With a word,” the noble started.
“You forget who I am and what I am doing. You might say that I have the king’s ear. I think that is you who needs to watch your tongue,” the healer snipped.
A groan from the king, then he whispered, “I think it’s a little late for that, dead noble.” The noble screamed then fell over dead. “I see you have almost finished my leg. The pain has lessened greatly, I will remember.”
The healer nodded as the king stayed awake, his own healing finally starting.
This was going to have to stop, the king thought. I know that I am far stronger than this human is, how is he able to overcome me?
The healer kept going, not daring to open his mouth. He almost had the one leg done, as he could see that the king’s healing was indeed starting.
An hour later, the healer was able to start on the other leg. The healing was going faster the more he got done.
The king, still grimacing, looked at the doorway, then beckoned to the first he saw. “How many of the nobles have we lost,” he asked.
The youth that approached him bowed to the floor, “over half, especially in the upper reaches of the houses. My own cruel father included in that number.”
The king tried to think about it, though thought was still difficult. Only the upper ranks of the nobles? This was going to take a bit of thought, he thought, as the pain lessened.
Dan and the females with him trudged onward as he was following the pull. He was far happier now that the strong pull from before was gone.
He smiled as he thought that the threat of death might have worked. The problem was that he still had no idea just what or who the pull was.
Dan saw that they were finally out of the Incubi and Succubus territory. They had managed to get the Succubus tribe that left a few hours ago, to accept the twenty that were with him.
He had been afraid that they might have wanted to kill them. He also felt fortunate that most had been from the tribe he met there.
They had passed a great many Succubus tribes but hardly any Incubi. Dan had thought to ask those with him, but kept his own council ‘til later.
They had barely passed over the border when he felt the approach of more of the spectures. Dan was tense as he felt then drawing closer, then saw the leader of the one that he’d met before.
“Hail Grand Mage Dan, I have brought several more tribes with me,” the specture said. Dan could see that the great many with him were indeed far worse than the ones he met before.
Dan also saw that there was a great many more than he had healed before. Dan reached to the first in line, then stopped when the specture drew back.
Dan stepped back and lowered his hand, looking at the leader from before. “I am afraid that I can’t heal them as they are completely terrified of me. I’m afraid that the healing won’t work. I’m sorry that you brought them all this way, but if they refuse there’s nothing I can do.
The leader nodded as sadly as Dan and turned to the multitude there. “Is there just one here that is not afraid that the Grand Mage won’t destroy you? If so, step forward.”
For a few moments there was only fearful murmuring, then a young-looking specture floated forward. “I am not afraid, though can I ask, will it hurt?”
Dan, a look of shock on his face, bent to the young specture. “I didn’t think that you could feel pain, young one,” Dan said softly.
“I was told that only a mage could make us feel pain,” the young specture said as it looked at Dan. “You won’t hurt me, will you mage, sir?”
“I will do my best to not hurt you,” Dan said in all honesty.
“You lie!” A voice rose loudly from near the back. “You’re a human, your kind has never done anything but hurt our kind.”
Dan nodded as he looked at the female specture near the back. “If you think I will hurt you, then you come and receive the healing first. That is unless the brave specture clans are afraid.”
“Afraid! The specture clans are not afraid of a mere human!” the female specture said as she weakly pushed her way forward. “Now human,” she spit in disgust, “When you hurt me, my family will take your soul!”
Dan shook his head as he waited, then said, “I can not heal you if you refuse, as I can feel you are. You said you wanted me to, but you still refuse, I am sorry, but I can not while you won’t allow me.” Dan turned to the leader with a sigh. “This young one is the only one that will allow me to heal them.”
Dan reached out gently and placed a hand on the spectral shoulder of the young specture. There was a massive gasp as the young specture grew brighter and much healthier.
The specture laughed as the healing had tickled, he then thanked Dan and ran to his mother. He pulled her to Dan, as it asked him to heal her.
“Do you wish me to heal you?” Dan asked. The female specture still speechless, could only nod as Dan reached out and touched her.
Again there was a huge gasp as the female grew brighter and healthier. The female whose mouth was open motioned to a few who were carrying a male specture.
“Can, can you help him? He and my son are all that I have left,” the female finally spoke in a pleading voice.
“I can try, though if he refuses, then I am afraid that I won’t be able,” Dan said as the male was brought forward.
The female bent forward and started to whisper into the male’s ear. At first, the male shook his head ‘til he opened his eyes and saw the female and youth.
Then, with a weak sigh, he looked at a sad Dan. He then started to whisper back to the female, the voice growing weaker.
“He has agreed but please hurry,” she pleaded. “He is so weak I am afraid that he won’t last much longer.”
Dan immediately knelt and laid a hand on the male. Dan’s arm started to glow, as did the male. The glow started to get brighter as Dan had to pour more and more energy into him.
Finally, two minutes later, the male drew a steady breath, then his eyes opened. “Shalah? What has happened? I thought I was dead, just glad to be with you. Then I felt an almost holy power grasp me and slowly pull me back.” He turned to look at a pale-looking Dan. “It was you I felt, thank you,” Then he saw the young male specture Dan had healed. “Santra?”
The female specture nodded with a smile as the young male specture hugged the both of them. The female bowed to Dan, “I thank you for my family as I said they are all I have left, thank you.”
Dan nodded, then teetered, Gre’ta grabbing him as he almost fell. “So the great human is a fake after all!” The same female from before shouted, but was quickly quieted by the glare of the leader.
He arose and got in the face of the female, “You will be fortunate if he ever consents to heal you. Especially after what he just did. He healed two entire clans of dark elves, be quiet or I might take exception!”
The female shrunk down to half her size as she realized the error that she had just made. She then made her way to Shalah and started to beg her to get the human to help her family.
“I will ask him, though with as negative as you were, it will depend on you,” Shalah said as the female nodded her head.
Gre’ta turned to the leader, “I am afraid that the last he did for the male took more than he thought it would. I am afraid that he will need to rest then he can start on the others.”
The leader, the few that had come back with him and the male and female made all the sick comfortable. The leader was surprised when more of the specture clans appeared.
There was a hint of disappointment ‘til it was explained what Dan had done. Luckily, none were as bad off as the male had been, but Gre’ta made sure that the worst were ready to go first.
Almost ten hours later, Dan awoke with a start, a little confused about where he was. Then again, he was even more surprised when he saw the huge amount of specture clans waiting for him.
The leader and the male and female had gone through all there, explaining that Dan needed them to agree to healing. Almost all had seen what Dan had done and were readily in agreement.
As Dan walked through, he had to barely touch them to heal, though there were still at least twenty that didn’t. Dan sadly walked away even when they started to yell at him.
What surprised him the most was when another clan of Dark elves that appeared. He had started to heal a few of them, when he stopped, shaking his head, he walked away.
The older dark elf he’d met the day before appeared with a questioning look on her face. “As I tell all that I heal, if I feel that they are resisting or refusing, then I can not heal them.”
The elder Priestess looked at those that had shown up and shook her head. One of them was her younger sister, who wore a disgusted look on her face.
“So,” the elder Priestess said to her and the others. “You don’t wish to continue to live as this disease will kill you. The human,” she started, then was interrupted.
“What! The human is the only one that can heal us? Bah, such fantasy stories. If he is as powerful as you say he is, then he heal no matter what,” her sister spit.
