Chapter 7: How I Became a Superhero, for Real

The army, or the air force, or maybe both, arrived. Big green and grey trucks, helicopters, soldiers with guns, high-ranking military people in crisp dusty uniforms, orders, arguments, and I sat in the center. My gaze stayed on the alien creature that I killed. First contact, and I killed it.

They removed the thing and moved me to a lab to interrogate, study, and threaten, until they figured out that they couldn’t hurt me. Even asleep, my skin will harden to protect me, because our mind, even when asleep, keeps track of the world around us.

Finally, they starved me, and I broke, because a girl’s gotta eat, and I told them my story. All of it. From birth, through my teenage years, even about my first boyfriend, and my second, and the one I hooked up with, the one-night stand, my failed superhero career, and they listened, they cared, they even helped me sort out my feelings.

The general arrived in the second week.

I sat in my decent-sized cell, larger than my apartment in the city, in a leather chair, with a stack of books to my left. They provided every book I wanted, and I caught up on all those books that you meant to read but either didn’t have the time nor the money to read.

The general sat down on the edge of my king-sized bed, with silk sheets and twenty-three pillows. I had kept asking for another pillow, and they brought me another pillow. My mostly eaten lunch, fried chicken, the best I have ever eaten, with mashed potatoes, gravy, and green beans, sat on the round wooden table to my right.
