“All? What a stupid race. I am glad that we ignored them. I see that there are no survivors, were there? So their planet is almost undefended, good target practise later,” the queen laughed.

“For now, we will have to just drift ‘til we can isolate everything. That or we could stall out and be here that much longer. Not sure if the food supplies can last that long,” the male said.

The Queen sighed, then waved a leg at him, “Make it so. We are on rationing as of now.” The Queen shook her head as she thought that this was going to piss a lot of the crew off.

She looked at the male, her interest rising a bit. It had been a long time since she mated with a male as big as her. Hmmm, she thought it might be worth it.

The chief engineer saw the look that the Queen was giving, making him shiver a bit. He wanted no part of breeding her, ending in his assured death. He’d avoid that for too long to give up for a night of pleasure.

He removed himself off the bridge as hurriedly as possible, he had a job to do. Though as he thought about it, if he didn’t get the fleet going very soon, she’d kill him anyway. The energy he’d read from the attack had been massive.

He saw and hadn’t told the Queen about that nor that there weren’t any enemy ships.

Derrick went to see his family, his mother and grandmother hadn’t said much. Were they still afraid that he was mad after their interfering with the wedding? He was going to have to find out soon.

The fact that his mother had been the way she was, was still a worry to him. He stopped at her room, pressing the chime as soon as he arrived.

The moment she answered the door, he could see that she had been crying. “Mom, are you alright? What has happened? Derrick asked her.

A moment later, Derrick just shook his head as he had Mary get his Grandmother there. “Is something wrong, Derrick?” his grandmother asked.

He could only look at her, then his mother, who was near emotional collapse. “What have the two of you been doing? I realize that she isn’t as tough as you, but you have to cut her some slack.”

His grandmother’s face tensed a moment, then softened. Milley O’Toma nodded as she thought of the past few years and her behavior.

“I’m sorry, Sherry, I forgot that you lost my son, as I did his father. I am sorry if I have alienated you all this time,” Milley said.

Sherry O’Toma stared at her mother-in-law, then at Derrick. She then switched back and forth a few times, not sure if what she’d heard was true.

“I’ve always wondered what I had done wrong,” Sherry said. “It never seemed that I could do anything right for you or your son. When he died, and I was alone with Derrick, I felt so alone. If not for Derrick, I don’t think I’d have made it.”

A look of almost complete despair came over Milley’s face. “I always forget that you loved him as fiercely as you did. I am so sorry that I pushed you away and left you so alone, never again.”

Derrick sighed upon hearing this, finally he thought they were a family, such as, they were again. He just hoped that it stayed that way.

Derrick hugged the both of them, then sat to watch them re-bond. With everything that was happening, some good news was a breath of fresh air.

“I have to go Gram, mom, I’ll try to see the both of you more often now. Sorry I have just been so busy lately,” Derrick said.

Both of them hugged him as he arose to leave. “We understand, running everything that you are is a great responsibility,” his mother said.

Derrick nodded as he left the room feeling far lighter than he had for a long time. Now he just had to solve the problems that were still assailing him and the empire.

He stopped at the four rooms of his injured commanders. Checking their readings, he nodded. According to what he saw, they should be back soon.

He stopped the longest in the last room, as of yet, Rayburn hadn’t awoken. “Has there been any change in his readings,” Derrick asked Mary.

“Some sire, I have started to detect more active alpha and beta waves. I am also seeing a reduction in his delta waves. This seems to indicate that his conscious mind is starting to re-emerge,” Mary said.

Derrick nodded as he looked at Cetalina and the worry on her face. “We’re doing all we can for him. Try to take it easy on him when he awakes. He and Kimison have been friends for a very long time.”

Cetalina nodded as she took all this in, “I realize this sire. They are both very honorable and,” here she sighed. “They can also be idiots, as they proved this time.”

A wide grin came to Derrick’s features as he nodded, he knew this for a fact, as his wife did about him. There were times he knew that he was so concentrated on something that he forgot everything.

“I am hoping that all four of them are better soon. I have a campaign that I need all of them for. I could do it, though I will need all of them,” Derrick said.

Cetalina nodded, then started as Rayburn groaned. “Really sir, you got to be so loud?” Rayburn whispered.

Derrick smiled greatly as Cetalina started to kiss Rayburn’s face all over. “Husband!” she shouted, making Rayburn groan again.

Derrick smiled as he quietly left the room. A loud beeping from the first room drew his attention.

“Mary report!” Derrick said as he hurried to Kimon’s room.

“It appears that General Dempsy has finished his healing,” Mary said.

Derrick entered the room, seeing Onai helping Kimon out of the bio-bed. “So, you listened for once,” Derrick said. “Now if you can help the others.”

Derrick shook his head at the look of confusion on Kimon’s face, “Sir, I,” Kimon started.

Derrick had an angered look on his face, “Cut the shit Dempsy. I need all of you to plan a campaign against a huge pirate nest.”

This caught Dempsy’s attention, “Sire, I will start on them as soon as possible.”

“You will all need to be brought up to speed on the present difficulties that we are facing. It has progressed far beyond what they were when you four were incapacitated,” Derriock said.

Kimon Dempsy, nodded, as Onai made sure he wasn’t going to fall once he was on his feet. “I will endeavor to get them up as soon as I can.”

“Also,” Derrick added. “Rayburn just awoke, and his wife is still very worried be easy.”

Kimon nodded in understanding, “understood sir. I am glad to hear that he’s recovering now,” Kimon said.

Derrick paused a moment then left the room. He was met almost immediately by General Daniel Norman. “Sir, I’ve started to draw up plans for an attack on the pirate base. This is all contingent on the intel that we have at the moment.”

“Are they as entrenched as we think they are?” Derrick asked.

They entered another room that resembled a war room. Displayed on several screens were the maps of the planet, the pirate base, bio-signatures. There were also lists of weapons, their capabilities and where most were.

“They are well entrenched though not as well as we have seen before. They have most of the city wired, though it’s mostly radio-controlled,” Norton said.

This news made Derrick smile as the radio-controlled explosives were easier to hack. “I take it that you and Mary have almost all the codes?”

An almost sinister smile grew on Norman’s face. “Most definitely, sir. Shouldn’t take long for the rest.”

An almost similar smile came up on Derrick’s features. “Good, with Kimon out of danger, the others should be up a lot sooner.”

“Rayburn is awake? ‘Bout time he got up. Think I’ll go see him as soon as we are done,” a smiling Norman said.

Derrick nodded as he left, heading toward the throne room. “Mary, I need the status of Lucie and Sherry. Also, any further intel on the invading Cregons. Any further intel on the pirates beyond what we have so far.”

“I am working those up now sire,” Mary said. “Lucie is on the extreme far side of the debris field. It appears that the Cregons are unable to detect her. At present, the three enemy planets are still experiencing difficulties with their ships. As at present, Ex-Duke Risen is just out of weapons range; his ship appears to be repaired. The Cregons have nearly stopped before the debris field. Apparently the Ripalon energy is affecting them also.”

“I see that we have thirty-three ships with another four in re-gen. I take it we have Ellen holding the cases as before? Have we designated another when she is filled to capacity?” Derrick asked.

“I believe that Helena will also be able to operate in that capacity,” Mary said. “They are almost the same in their interior design.”

Derrick nodded, glad that Lucie was safe, as was Sherry. A moment later, a beep sounded, “Hello Lucie,” Derrick said.

“Sire,” both Sherry and Lucie replied.

“I am sure that you are aware that there are over two million Cregon ships on the other side of the debris field. We haven’t seen that they have detected you. I wish that you stay that way, so you can return. How goes the hunt?” Derrick asked.

“For the moment, it is slower than we thought,” Lucie said. “The Tendraxians had a hell of a lot of dangerous security on the brain boxes.”

“Thankfully, the A.I.’s within the boxes, have been able to aid us. All the time to disarm and clear them is less than half now. Though it is still taking at least two hours,” Sherry said.

“Ah, good. I also wanted to let you know that Marco and Zan are in re-gen. Did you wish to know when they are about to emerge?” Derrick said.

Lucie had a slightly bewildered look on her face for a moment, then she slowly nodded. “Please sir,” she said as tears started to fall. “Please let me know so I can apologize to him. What he did I do not feel worthy of, no matter what I am.”

Derrick saw the tears and was quiet for a moment, then nodded. “I’ll let you know in time so you can be here. Please, stay safe and out of their detection.”

“We will sire,” Lucie said then the connection went dead. “Prime? Are you alright?” Sherry asked, a few tears in her eyes also.

“For the moment, no, no I am not. I am hoping that he doesn’t hate me for what I said and what happened. The rest of your brothers and sisters haven’t indicated they do, but I feel they should,” Lucie said as more tears escaped her eyes.

“I hope that when he returns that you can heal, as I can feel that you are hurting prime, Sherry said.

“I know,” Lucie said. “I know that you are hurting also Sherry. He was your wing mate after all.”

Lucie sat there and wished she could hug Sherry. The look of sadness on Sherry’s face mirrored her own, though for different reasons.

Derrick clicked over to another channel, the face of a battle-hardened Ranger appearing. “Lieutenant, how goes the training?”
