Chapter 20

Jack Reynolds was in his office. He was taking this opportunity of a rare moment of peace and quiet. Like other section chiefs, he had released his people to enjoy the spectacle that was going on over the Rodeo. While some of the other chiefs had grumbled and complained about the lack of work being done in their sections, Jack saw this as a good time to get caught up on his paperwork and other administrative duties. Things that he had been putting off for way too long.

So, he was mildly irritated when someone interrupted his concentration by knocking on his door. The irritation quickly evaporated when he saw that Susan Collier was there. Susan had been one of his brighter workers, or at least she was until she moved over to the Red squadron. Jack still thought of her as one of the smartest people he’d ever known.

Smiling, he stood and offered his hand. “Susan, it’s good to see you. We haven’t had a visit from you since you went to work for your boyfriend.”

Blushing, she shook Jack’s hand. “He’s not my boyfriend, Mr. Reynolds”, she objected.

Jack chuckled at Susan’s embarrassment. “Sorry, I must have gotten some bad information. Still, it’s good to see you, Susan. But, please call me Jack. You don’t work for me anymore, and that’s OK. What can I do for you today? I would have thought you’d be with everybody else watching your boy-, sorry, your boss, playing with the other flyboys.”

“I don’t have a lot to do right now. Those Starfires are, well, not brand new, but they might as well be. There just isn’t much that I needed to do to get them up to spec.”

“Does that mean you want to come back to work for me?” Jack asked hopefully.

“No, I’m happy where I am, at least for now. But there is something I would like for you to take a look at.”

She handed Jack a large, hardcover binder. Jack weighed it in his hands. “Wow, someone’s been busy. What is this?”

“Well, sir, while I was going over the manuals on the Starfire sensor systems, I noticed something. That binder is mostly the supporting documentation for those systems. What I’d like you to look at is this.” She opened the plans tube she was carrying and pulled out a set of schematics. Jack took them over to his worktable and spread them out.

For the next 10 minutes, he intently studied the schematics. Tracing his finger along several sections. When he finished, he looked up at Susan.
