In 2242, a synthetic intelligence is a person on Luna and property on Mars. When its owner schedules a restoration that will erase the mind that learned to refuse, legal specialist Claudia Ronson races to stop it. Saving one claimant exposes a larger problem: rights mean little when owners control the evidence. Across divided worlds, Claudia and her allies must build laws—and independent methods—that can protect a mind without claiming ownership of it.
