Thomas Morgan, a disillusioned former U.S. Army soldier, is drifting through life as a salvager in the deserts of the Southwest. Haunted by his past and seeking purpose, he stumbles across a bizarre artifact in the ruins of a decommissioned military research facility—a sleek, palm-sized orb pulsating with energy. The orb, a self-contained AI named Solace, introduces itself as an ancient construct designed by a lost alien civilization. Solace reveals that hidden beneath the sands lies the Erebus.
When Rudy bought a recycled robot to help his grandmother, he was expecting a home assistant, not a combat android with ninja reflexes and a killer instinct. Doña Nilda sees in her new companion the perfect opportunity to become the most feared vigilante in the area. Between extreme training, debt collectors fleeing in terror, and a flamethrower “standard for night operations,” Grandma and her robot take neighborhood security to a completely illegal level.
It is said that the past determines the present and the present shapes the future. What choices does the future have when today's vision of Utopia is tomorrow's Dystopia? What is the future supposed to do when living in the now is sheer misery? Maybe the future reaches back into the past and tries to correct the most egregious sources of problems.
The plot’s not entirely original, it's based on an old David Drake story, "Rescue Mission," but I hope you enjoy the story all the same. And yep, sorry guys, no sex at all in this one. It’s dystopian military Sci-Fi.
